Get rid of dust mites? Or get rid of your mattress?

As we already known, a brand new mattress will be infested with dust mites and other harmful micro-organisms within only a very short amount of time begins from the first moment you sleep on it. We cannot deny that there are people who keep their mattresses for over 10 years without any complaints, except that the mattress may feel less firm eventually.

AllerX do advise our customers and dealers that mattress, as well as pillows and cushions, they all have a limited lifespan. Proper maintenance will of course expand their life, but at one point you just have to replace them. For a good quality pillow, it is still affordable to replace it every 2 years. However, a mattress is normally expensive, and are you really willing to replace it just because you feel the threats from dust mites?

There is research saying mattress made out of memory foam and latex may be more effective in preventing growth of dust mites and other bacteria compare to the traditional type of mattress.

An average quality memory foam mattress can break between 3 to 5 years, without even considering whether the owner is over weighted or not, which can certainly speed up the deterioration of the material. Besides, memory foam is also temperature reactive. In other words, it will become softer, when you lay on it, and your body temperature starts to warm it up. The consequence is that your body will be confused about what is the real room temperature and the real body temperature, therefore it cannot adjust the temperature effectively as it is supposed to be.

Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. Dust mites, mold and fungus will have difficulties in surviving on a latex mattress, so your allergies will not be triggered. It is also breathable, and less temperature sensitive as memory foam. However, some processes use petroleum or chemicals during manufacturing, which make a latex mattress a more complex product than the biodegradable latex found in nature. The chemicals involved can still cause irritation to some allergies.

The mostly chosen type of mattress is still made out of cotton textile, fiber and metal. It is the best breathable and definitely the cheaper product. The down side of it is the problem of absorb and contain the moisture in it, which is in favor of the growth of dust mites and other bacteria. Without being treated properly and regularly, it will become a big threats to people who have allergy issues.
