About Dust Mites
An average Dust Mite measures 420 µm in length and between 250 to 320 µm in width. They are very tiny creatures, with an average life cycle from 20 to 30 days for male, and up to 10 weeks for female. Each single one produces approximately 2000 fecal particles, and an even larger number of partially digested enzyme-infested dust particles. All these small particles become allergens for itching, mucosal inflammation and bronchitis, sometime even worse allergies, such as Asthma.
Dust mites feed on organic detritus such as flakes of shed human skin. Dust mites survive in almost all climates, and unfortunately, in every home, every mattress and more.
In nature they are killed by micro-predators and/or by exposure to direct sun rays. In our house, dust mites are transported by air currents generated by normal household activities. They thrive in our beds, kitchens and homes in general, preferably where the sun’s rays cannot reach them. They remain in mattresses, carpets, furniture and beddings, because they can climb lower down through the fabric to avoid sun, vacuum cleaners, and other hazards. They can also climb higher up to the surface to search for food. Even in dry climates, dust mites can still survive and reproduce easily in bedding (especially in pillows) thanks to the humidity generated by human breathing and perspiring during the whole night sleep.
One thing is sure that no matter how clean your house looks like, dust mites can always be found.
Dust Mites Allergy
Dust mite allergens account for 80-90% of allergenic compound found in the home. They are considered to be the most common cause of Asthma and various allergic symptoms worldwide. The House Dust Mites left their partially digested food and their fecal particles, which is one of the most significant sources of allergens, such as Asthma, Rhinitis, Conjunctivitis and Dermatitis. Most of these allergenic compounds are found in the mattresses, as well as from furniture, carpet, and other upholsteries.
The dust mite produces 200 times its body weight in excrement in its lifetime. This excrement firstly adheres to the fabric as small mucous coated balls. Later on, it decomposes to a fine powder like dust. Dust mite excrement contains Guanine, which can cause various allergic reactions and serious health issues to human beings. Dust mite droppings contain Enzymes, which can break down the protective lining of our lungs, nasal passages and eyes if breathed in.
It is a scientific fact that exposure to the allergen Guanine found in dust mite excrement is directly responsible for numerous lifelong allergies. Asthma, triggered by the chemical guanine, is increasing at an alarming rate amongst children. Australian research has revealed that 80% of people with Asthma are allergic to the house dust mite. Allergy to dust mite is the 6th most serious sickness in the world (World Health Organization, 1995), and 25% of all allergies are due to dust mite.
Control Dust Mites
As quick as within 6 months, a brand new mattress will become a host of contaminates. About 90% of dust mites are located in the mattress as that is where their food source exists. No matter how clean your home is, you will be sharing your bed with millions of dust mites, greedily feeding on your shed dead skin. Dust mites are much smaller than dust, which requires higher quality filter, such as HEPA filter, to catch them. It is research proved that while most filters remove 50-70% of particles passing through, HEPA filters will remove up to 99% of them.
Even protective bedding has little effect on reducing allergic reactions. Bleaching and strong soaps do not kill dust mites, but only add chemical hazard to people who already suffering from allergies. A thoroughly wash of the beddings and pillows will remove most dust mites in the waste water. Temperatures of over 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of one hour are usually fatal to dust mites. Freezing may also be fatal to dust mites.
However, it is impossible to wash mattress thoroughly to kill the dust mites in it. The challenge is to find a media can pass through mattress, which can reach the deepest corner where dust mites hide.
